MIDLETON SNATCH VICTORY
MIDLETON SNATCH VICTORY
IN THE CARRIGALINE FOURS
IN THE CARRIGALINE FOURS
The Carrigaline Community Bowls Club staged the final ses-
sion of their Annual Licensed Fours Competition for the Carri-
galine Community Perpetual Trophy. The event was held over
6 days in the local Community Sports Hall and was once again
a great success, attracting 64 teams from all the leading Bowls
Clubs over a wide area of the Cork Zone.
The competition was won by Midleton who defeated
Ballincollig GAA in the final after a very close and exciting match. In the final, Con O’Sullivan,
Kathleen O’Reilly, Callie O’Sullivan & Joe Kirby opened up with a two for Midleton but on the next
end Eithna Linehan, Alice O’Donoghue, P.J. Hagan & Jerry O’Donoghue immediately struck back
for Ballincollig GAA with a two of their own to level the match and it was game on! A single for Mi-
dleton put them back in front but a two for Ballincollig then gave them the lead at 4 – 3 and a single
on the next end made it 5 – 3.
The following end was a non-scoring end and thus the two teams went into the final end with
Ballincollig GAA seemingly having one hand on the trophy. However, Midleton had other ideas
and struck with a vital three to win the tournament by 6 shots to 5.
The umpires on duty for the final session were Mary Boyde and Eddie Mills. The individual
prizes were presented by Theresa Burke the Carrigaline Club Captain and the Perpetual Trophy
was presented by Hazel Payne (League Hon. Sec.) to Joe Kirby, the Skip of the winning team.

Watergrasshill Bowls Club staged the final session of their Annual Licensed Triples Competition
for the John O’Callaghan Memorial Trophy. The competition was held in the local Community Hall
and was won by a team from the home club who defeated Grange/Frankfield in the final. Once
again the competition proved a great success and attracted an entry of 88-teams comprising of
264 players from the City/County clubs over a wide area.
At the quarter-final stage Mitchelstown (D. Cahill) beat Crosshaven’s Keith Middleton, Conor
Middleton & Con Middleton; Grange/Frankfield (J. Long) beat the Cathedral Parish trio of Rita
Looney, Noeleen Quinn & Denis Dennehy; whilst, Conna (B. Hamilton) got the better of Rita Cul-
linane, Gerty Stroker & Eamon Stroker of B.E.D.A. Completing the round Watergrasshill (D. Crow-
ley) beat Mitchelstown’s Joe Devlin, Phil Lawton & Tom Lawton.
In the semi-finals Grange/Frankfield, led by J. Long beat Mitchelstown’s Jim Caplice, Andy
Callanan & Dick Cahill. Also making it to the final Watergrasshill (D. Crowley) beat Conna’s Frank
Goss, Dave Cliffe & Bridie Hamilton.
The final proved to be somewhat one-sided as Watergrasshill’s Paddy O’Regan, Kiernan
O’Regan & Denis Crowley quickly established 7 - 0 lead after four ends. Grange/Frankfield’s Phyllis
Long, John Swanick & John Long then scored a two but all hopes were then extinguished as Wa-
tergrasshill scored a 5 on the next end to lead 12 - 2 and eventually won 13 - 5.
The umpires on duty for the final session were Eddie Mills, Michael J. O’Shaughnessy, Con
O’Sullivan & Albert Ruxton and the individual prizes were presented by Eddie Mulholland the Wa-
tergrasshill Club Captain. The John O’Callaghan Memorial Trophy was presented by Joan O’-
Callaghan to Denis Crowley, the Skip of the winning team.
