Only two games remained on the last day and 25
Boswell needed only one point to lift the trophy
but his triple suffered a 7-4 defeat against Mar-
garet Barley’s triple to set up an intriguing last
session.
Boswell faced Cambridgeshire’s Lonnie
Fyson and found himself in a fierce battle while
Barley was storming ahead against Tony
Orpin’s Essex triple on the adjoining mat. If
Boswell lost this match Barley would have
completed a great last day comeback but
Boswell achieved a 5-5 draw to leave his triple
level with Barley on points but with a vastly su-
perior shots difference. Malcolm Reynold’s
triple finished in third place. Pairs Winners Paul Cairns & Tony Orpin
The Pairs Final saw Paul Cairns & Tony
Orpin of East Hanningfield face Margaret & Malcolm Reynolds of RG Carter. After the Reynolds
pair took a single on the first end good bowling by Cairns & Orpin earned them a 2-1 lead after two
ends. Margaret Reynolds bowling was the difference on the next end as RG Carter levelled the
game at 2-2. Tony Orpin finished off a rather messy fourth end with a perfect draw shot to take two
shots and a 4-2 lead and produced the goods once
again on the next end to lead 5-2.
Paul Cairns opened the next end with a lovely
draw shot onto the jack but Margaret Reynolds re-
sponded with a good backhand bowl. The end was
ultimately decided by a fortunate last wood by the
RG Carter skip that unintentionally knocked in a
Carter bowl for shot.
Two excellent bowls by Orpin extended their
lead to 8-3 on the seventh end with two ends re-
maining. Malcolm Reynolds found himself two shots
down with one wood to play on the penultimate end
but his running wood failed to negotiate a short bowl
leaving the Essex pair 10-3 up and in an unbeatable
Pairs Runners-up position.
Malcolm & Margaret Reynolds Tony Orpin had originally entered the event
with his wife Jenny Orpin who later sadly passed away. Naturally the event was an emotional one
for Tony, as his bowling friends at Potters were fully aware, and his win was a popular one among
his fellow players. In the third place play-off Peter
& Sue Fox of Horsford Heroes beat Gwen &
Richard Brown of Kent side Boughton under
Water.
