TOURNAMENT
No less than 120 players
entered the tournament or-
ganised by Janet & Arthur
Cuff. The event was staged
over a weekend at the TLH
resort in Torquay and was
in aid of the Devon Free-
wheelers.
They are a team of 50
Emergency Vehicle Drivers
delivering essential Blood
samples, medication and
Donor Breast milk to hospi-
tals throughout Devon..
The opening day, Sat-
urday, was a Pairs Compe-
tition but the Sunday triples
was the main event with 40 teams taking part.
A number of teams stayed in the hotel overnight and battle commenced on Sunday
morning. All teams played four games during the day with the winners being the team
that won the most games with shots difference sorting out the teams on equal wins.
In the first round of games with 20 teams playing, Landrake “A” started off like a
train and rattled up a 21 - 2 over Hemyock. Winkleigh Drifters managed a shots plus of
12 and Abbotskerswell had a plus of 11.
In the second round of games with another 20 teams. Willand Kath’s Team
amassed and opening plus of 17 shots beating Warmley “C”. An experienced Bow team
managed an 11 - 0 “shut out” against Christow. Not to be outdone by their clubmates,
Landrake “B” rattled up a 19 - 3 scoreline over St. Teresa.
Winkleigh Drifters added another 7 shots in the next round to be in second place
on +18, with the Young Ones just one shot behind but Landrake “A” were in stunning
form with a 22 - 0 win over Torquay “A” giving them a superb total of +41. Landrake “B”
slipped back with just three shots on +19. Bow added to their total and also finished on
+19 but Willand Kath’s team suffered a defeat reducing them to +9.
Winkleigh Drifters, Bow, Landrake “B” were all level on +19 and the Young Ones
were +18 and other teams very close behind. However, runaway leaders Landrake “A”
were going to take quite some catching provided they didn’t lose a game. Winkleigh
Drifters challenge came unstuck after suffering a defeat.
The Young ones moved into second place on +26, with Landrake “B” on +25 after
scraping past Abbotskerswell 7 - 6 and Landrake “A”‘s +42. The final round of games
beckoned and it was very tight with a number of teams in the hunt, waiting for the lead-
ers to slip up. The first to fall were the Young ones who’s defeat ended their challenge
whilst Bow recorded the fourth victory taking second place finishing on +28. Whilst Lan-
drake “B” had a narrow 2 shot win and finished third on +27. Landrake “A” were out-
standing winners and added 6 shots to make their final +48. Warmley “A” made a last
gasp run to finish fourth with four wins and +19. The date for next year will be confirmed
shortly and will as usual be advertised in Short Mat International.
