TRIPLES - England halt the Irish run
10 TRIPLES - England halt the Irish run
The triples proved to be a very open affair and
went right down to the wire. The opening Wales
v Ireland match saw Mark Beattie, Aaron Ten-
nant & Terry Mulholland claw their way to a 12
all draw scoring a single and a two over the
closing two ends, which in the end didn’t suit
either team.
England’s Callum Beale, Dan Winwill &
Darren Cookson had to perform a similar feat
against Scotland from 9 all they finished 1 - 2 -
1 for a 12 - 9 result.
However, in the next round they were
beaten12 - 10 by Wales, whilst Ireland were
beating Scotland 19 - 10.
The final round was a winner takes all sit-
uation but the form book was turned upside
down. First from 4 - 9 down England took the next seven and ran out 12 - 9 over Ireland. The
championship title was stil in Wales hands and with just the last end to play they led 12 - 11 but
the Scots trio of A. Bruce, T. Skinner & P. Geddes had other ideas and scored a four for a 15 - 12
victory, leaving England as champions and the Irish as runners-up.
RINKS - Irish four in a winner takes all finish
RINKS - Irish four in a winner takes all finish
In the opening round of the fours, with Wales 8
- 2 up against Ireland’s Aaron Taylor, Graham
Christie, G McKee & DJ Wilson all looked lost
but the Irish four found another gear and took
the next six ends for a 15 - 8 victory.
In the other match England’s Sadie
Young, Karl Hudson, Barry Keirle & Herbie
Bowden were almost home at 9 - 6 with just the
last end to play but up stepped the Scots four
of C. Stephen, S. Riley, N. Stephen & G. Riley
to score a heart-breaking five for an 11 - 9 win.
England’s second match saw them well
beaten 16 - 4 by Ireland who took ten of the
twelve ends played, whilst the scots completed
another last end win scoring a single for a 7 - 6
win over Wales.
The final round saw a match between Scotland and Ireland, with the winner being crowned
the fours champions. In the end the pressure must have gotten to the Scots as Ireland turned on
the style for a superb 17 - 2 victory. This gave Ireland the championship, leaving Scotland as Run-
ners-up. The Wales v England match for the bottom places was won 13 - 8 by England.
“A” TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP - Ireland win yet again
“A” TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP - Ireland win yet again
In the opening round, Wales had the unenviable task of taking on the Irish who have never lost
the “A” team championships since the event started in 1997. Wales made a very good fist of it but
still lost 44 - 31. England had an easier task against Scotland with a 58 - 24 victory, helped by a
22 - 1 win by David Studden, Stephen Stanton, Paul King & Kevin Siddle. By a similar overall
match score in the next round Scotland lost 58 - 20 to Ireland, including an astonishing 20 - 0 win
by Garry McNabb, Stuart McSorley, Brian McAlary & Karl Bradshaw. The Wales v England match
was very tight with both sides winning two games. England’s overall by 38 - 34 victory was certainly
helped by a 15 - 6 win from Matt Dillon, David Newsome, Nicky Bartlett & Steve Burrows.
