In the final round Wales and Ireland needed England to lose and it was in Ireland’s hands
as they faced England. After eight ends Ireland led 6 - 4 but by end thirteen England’s 7
Allan Williams & Alan Jones led 13 - 6. With one end to go they had unassailable 16 - 7
lead and had already won the championship and a relaxed pair dropped a four on the last end but
still won 16 - 11. For Wales Lisa & Peter Rees ensured their runner-up spot with a 20 - 13 win
over Scotland
TRIPLES - Malone, Smith and Toleman for England
TRIPLES - Malone, Smith and Toleman for England
The opening round started with a big clash with Ire-
land’s Andy Riley, Nathan & Nickey Haire facing
England’s Bronagh Malone, James Smith & Lee
Toleman. England took first blood with a single on
the opening end but by end nine Ireland led 10 - 5.
A four to England put them just one shot behind but
going into the last end Ireland led 13 - 9. With Eng-
land just managing a two, Ireland’s duly won 13 - 11.
Wales Aled Humphreys, Andrew Jones & Nick
Evans also started with a 16 - 10 win over Scotland’s
Kevin Lawley, Craig Cummings & Roddy Gillies.
However, in the second round Wales were convinc-
ingly beaten by a stunning 17 - 5 scoreline by Eng-
land, which considerably helped the outcome of the
group. Meanwhile, Ireland were scoring their second victory with a 14 - 7 result over Scotland.
All that Ireland needed in the third and last round was a victory to take the title with an un-
beaten run. However, the Welsh trio were having none of this and played themselves into the hunt
with a 16 - 10 result. Ireland actually won over half the ends in this match but Wales outscored
Ireland on their winning ends. This left England in the driving seat as the games unfolded and they
romped home 21 - 7 and whilst three of the countries ended on 4 points each, England’s shots
plus was well ahead of the others, ensuring Bronagh Malone, James Smith & Lee Toleman were
the Triples champions, leaving Ireland in second place.

In the opening round, Ireland’s Robert Allen,
John Devine, Mark Beattie & Leigh Harrison,
easily beat Wales’ Wyn Davies, Medwyn
Jones, Osian Elias & Ceri Jones 17 - 8. The
damage was done from ends six to nine with a
scoring sequence of 5 - 4 - 2 - 1.
By a similar 17 - 9 scoreline England’s
Lee Hall, Chris Weston, Edward Sawbridge &
A.J. Brown beat Scotland’s Nigel Magee, Dean
McColm, Alex Higgins & Dave Kelly.
In the next round Scotland bounced back
and opened with a stunning five against Ire-
land. After this it became a very hard match but
in the end the Scots triumphed 15 - 13. England’s progress was then partly halted by the Welsh,
who took the first five ends with singles to lead 5 - 0 but by the penultimate end the English four
led 8 - 6. Back came the Welsh with a two to score the match with the points being shared.
In the third and final round the Scots were proving a strong team after seven ends they led
9 - 4 over Wales. The Welsh four fought back and by the penultimate end led 10 - 9 but not to be
outdone the Scots team struck back with a two on the last end to win 11 - 10. The English four of
Lee Hall, Chris Weston, Edward Sawbridge & A.J. Brown ensured their championship victory with
a 14 - 12 win over Ireland but the match was not as close as the scoreline suggests as the Irish
scored a five on the last end when England had already won.
