There were singles, pairs, triples & fours events, where you have to win three out of four
qualification games, to get through to the knock-out stages. Our aim at the start was to 29
simply win a game, but we got close to qualifying in both the pairs & triples, just missing
out on a third win. Finally in the fours, we got that elusive third win, qualifying for the knock-out
games on the second day. We ended up losing to the eventual winners at the last 32 stage, but
             had surpassed our expectations.
Playing in the NZ Nationals was an incredible experience and a massive challenge. The
venue had 80 mats, like nothing we have ever seen in the UK. The NZ bowlers were so wel-
coming, friendly & encouraging & have such a passion for their game. We also took the oppor-
tunity to do some sightseeing whilst we were there, New Zealand is such a beautiful country.
If you want to see how the NZ game is played, then take a look at their YouTube site.
Thoughts are now turning to a potential return visit to New Zealand in 2020 for their Nationals.
It is again being held in the North Island, in Whangarei, which is a couple of hours north of Auck-
land. Are you are interested in trying out the NZ game, we have two mats in Suffolk & one in
North Cambridgeshire & can give your club a demo. We are advised that more mats are avail-
able in New Zealand, if there is interest over here to purchase any.
             SIX COUNTIES CHARITY TEAMBOWL 2019
              SIX COUNTIES CHARITY TEAMBOWL 2019
This year's Six Counties Charity Teambowl was hosted by Essex at the new Littleport Leisure
Centre. Unfortunately Hertfordshire were unable to raise a full team, but nevertheless played
on with a squad of just 18, foregoing two of their triples and giving themselves a considerable
             handicap.
Round 1 - It was a fairly even start as Essex and Norfolk picked up 14 points each against
Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire respectively, while Suffolk just got the better of Cambridgeshire
13-11. Round 2 - Essex had by far the best session, picking up 18 points against Bedfordshire
while Suffolk and Hertfordshire (despite that handicap) both picked up 13 points against Norfolk
and Cambridgeshire respectively. Essex, on 32 points, led Suffolk by 6 and Norfolk by 7 points.
Round 3 - A combination of Suffolk gaining 18 points against Hertfordshire and Essex only
getting 9 against Norfolk saw a change at the top, while Cambridgeshire only just got the better
of Bedfordshire 13-11. Suffolk now led the way on 44, Essex were on 41 and Norfolk had 40
points. Round 4 - Cambridgeshire had their best session of the day so far with 15 points over
Essex, it was the same for Norfolk with 16 points against Hertfordshire and Suffolk came out on
top of Bedfordshire 18-6. Suffolk extended their lead at the top slightly and were now on 62
points, 6 ahead of Norfolk with Essex and Cambridgeshire both on 50.
Round 5 - Going into the final round everything was still up for grabs but what we ended
up with that 3 very clear cut results, two of the disastrous for title contenders. Hertfordshire, de-
spite their handicap picked up 17 of the 24 points on offer against Bedfordshire. Cambridgeshire
took 16 points off Norfolk and Suffolk had their best session of the day by dropping only 5 points
against Essex. That catapulted Cambridgeshire up to second place, dropping Norfolk down to
third but leaving Suffolk to take the win for the seventh consecutive year.
             Bedfordshire Singles
              Bedfordshire Singles
50 players in the Singles at Barton Le Clay. There were 10 groups of 5 with the winners
and 6 best runners-up to go through to the knockout rounds. The Group winners were as fol-
lows: Dan Walker, Tony Meredith, George Savage, Paul Hurren, Andrew
Hatton, Wendy Redding, Neil Rixon, Carol Still, Cherry Brock and Keith
Cockings. The 6 runners-up were Nathan Salvidge, Melvyn Baynes,
Patricia Bal, Matt Hatton, Sharon Kitchener and Sue MacDonald.
At the Semi Final stage Clophill’s Nathan Salvidge faced Paul
Hurren from Turvey. Paul was away quickly in the semi he was 7-0
up after 3 ends Nathan picked a single up but lost it on the next end
and was 8-1 down a 3. The 6th saw him have a chance to tie on the
last but Paul closed with a single to win 9-4.
