Held at East Hanningfield Hall, 18 teams
took part, two from each of Canvey Island
Football Club, Courage, East Hanningfield
and Rochford and one from East Tilbury,
Hatfield Peverel, Outwood Common
Bowls Club, Warren Heath, Wickford and
Willows Park, plus the Three Degrees, the
Winners Paul Bax, Josh and Dave Woods 3Gs and the Fintastic 3!
They were formed into three groups
of six to play a round robin of five games each, the winner being the team with the highest match
points and then shot difference and ends won being the deciders in the event of a draw.
In Group A the East Hanningfield Horseshoes
(Matt and Dave Sifford and Nigel Reed, as per pic-
ture) , Courage 1(John Pledger, Paul Mansfield and
Graham Jassy-Catton) and the Fintastic 3 Carol Finn,
Sarah Sarling and Peter Skippen) dominated.
Courage did well to beat the Horseshoes 8:5 but then
lost 6:9 to the Fintastic 3 and 2:6 to Wickford.
Fintastic 3 won four successive games but came
unstuck losing 1:15 to the Horseshoes. Courage won
three games, Wickford and Willows Park two each
and the 3Gs had one of those days and didn’t man- Runners-Up Matt & Dave Sifford
age to win any. and Nigel Reed
Group B was dominated by the other East Han-
ningfield Windmills (Paul Bax, Josh and Dave Woods as per picture); East Tilbury (Eileen Smith-
Allen, Maxine Horn and Pauline Childs) and; Courage 2. Courage 2 (Sue Pledger, Stella Miles
and Julie Bottjer) put up a strong performance winning three games and drawing 7:7 with the Wind-
mills, while East Tilbury were doing well until they met the Windmills who, by beating East Tilbury
9:3, remained unbeaten with 9 match points. The other teams won at least one game each.
In Group C there was a tight battle between the 3 Degrees (Josie Robinson, Moira Baker
and Brenda Crowe), Outwood Common Bowls Club (Linda Lambert, Joan and Alan Kay) and War-
ren Heath, but it was the determination of each team to win that cost them the top places in the
competition because they each won four games, but Warren Heath (Colin, Bobbie and Frankie
Addis) beat the 3 Degrees 7:4, Outwood Common beat Warren Heath 6:5 and the 3 Degrees beat
Outwood Common 9:6.
Each of them therefore scored eight match points but the battle cost them on shot difference.
There were some close games in this group. Canvey Island Football Club 2 were unlucky to lose
all their games but only just, by losing by one shot to Hatfield Peverel and two to both the 3 Degrees
and Rochford. Rochford gained two match points but again were unlucky losing one game by one
shot and two by two shots. The overall result was a win for the Windmills with 9 match points and
+34, second were the Horseshoes with 8 match points and +30 and third were East also with 8
match points but a shot difference of +25.
A big thank you to Steve Killington for organising the event and to all those who helped with
getting the equipment out and putting it away, catering and providing raffle prizes. The total raised
for the Hearing Dogs for the Deaf was in excess of £600.
