EXPLORING YOUR MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES
Once you have written your summary, compare it with the
original text to ensure you have captured the author’s main ideas
accurately. Ask yourself two critical questions: (1) Have I accurately
captured the author’s main ideas in a style that reflects my phrasing
and my words-my “voice”? (2) Is my summary more of an attempt
to imitate the original author’s phrasing, with only a few words
rearranged or replaced? If you find that your summary is too close
to the original text, consider incorporating some direct quotes
within your paraphrase to balance originality and accuracy.
5. Proofread, Revise, and Edit Your Summary
If you answered “yes” to the first question and “no” to
the second, you are ready to proofread, revise, and edit your
paraphrase. Don’t forget to include a citation according to your
particular writing style’s guidelines to avoid any hint of plagiarism.
If your answers to the questions were reversed, repeat the steps
above until you can confidently paraphrase the text accurately
and in your voice. Sometimes, incorporating a combination
of paraphrasing and direct quoting can effectively convey the
meaning to the reader without relying too heavily on lengthy block
quotes.
