• Avoid eating from market stalls unless there are a lot of locals eating there & you are willing
to take a risk.
• Avoid ice.
• Avoid salad (what has it been washed in)
• Brush teeth in bottled water only.
• Drink bottled water only.
• Generally, if something can’t be peeled boiled or cooked through DONT eat it
• If you think its "iffy" avoid it
• Pre and Probiotics are good to replace good gut bacteria and help to prevent “Gastro”.
• If going to HIGH-RISK AREA Dukoral may be suggested
If this fails and you get sick AVOID
• Caffeine - tea coffee coke
• Fruit
• Milk or milk products
• Roughage - cereals, brown bread, brown rice
• Vegetables
You can HAVE.
• Bananas
• Fish, meat, eggs (if this isn’t the source of the infection)
• Potato (not sweet potato) pasta
• Soy - including soy-based formula.
• White bread, white rice, including rice cereal.
You MUST
• Replace lost fluids with hydrolyte tablets (1 per 200ml bottled water), if necessary flavoured
with cordial or juice.
• Add 0.5l hydrolyte/24h if you have a fever.
• This is in addition to daily requirements of about 1.5litres – more if you are sweating.
• If you can eat and drink this isn’t always needed
Check skin turgor to see if you are dehydrated. Pinch the skin on the abdominal wall and look for
wrinkles – there shouldn’t be any!
• Do not reintroduce dairy until the diarrhoea has completely stopped.
• Start with small amounts so this can be easily stopped if the problem returns, i.e., 3/4 soy
:1/4 cows’ milk for a few days, then 1/2:1/2 then 1/4:3/4 if the diarrhoea returns stop and
go back to soy again
