Medical
Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE)
• Athletes may at times need to use prohibited medication to treat legitimate medical
condition.
• A TUE is an exemption that allows an athlete to use, for therapeutic purposes only, an
otherwise prohibited substance or method (of administering a substance)
• TUE approval may protect athletes from receiving a sanction if a prohibited substance is
found in their sample.
• An exemption is only granted provided there is no unfair advantage given to the athlete by
taking the substance or using the method.
• Not all medications are eligible for a TUE and having a TUE will only guard against a possible
breech if the medication is used as per the TUE.
• Information regarding TUE’s can found at
www.asada.gov.au/substances/therapeutic_use_exemptions.html.
