Sample Worksite Label

                  METHANOL

Flammable: Do not use near an open flame
                         or processes that generate sparks.

Avoid inhaling vapours. Keep containers sealed when
                         not in use.
Use black cartridge respirator and rubber gloves when
                         handling.

Review the MSDS, kept in stores, for more information.

The worksite label can be site-specific, i.e. it can give specific handling information on how the product
is to be used in your operation. As well, the MSDS location can be stated. Any other information you
feel is useful can be provided.

There are no specific requirements regarding colour, size, or shape of worksite labels. It is important
that they be distinctive and easily seen by workers, because they may be the first information seen
about a controlled product. Note, however, that the same colour restrictions apply (to not conflict with
            TDG).

Some workplaces use pictograms for hazard information and personal protective equipment.

            Variations on Worksite Labels

As with supplier labeling, there are certain situations where worksite labels may not be the best
solution. Therefore some variations are allowed:

“Other clear means of identification” are allowed in 2 situations:

                    (1) one worker – one shift:
o there is only going to be one person using the controlled product, and
o he or she is only going to use it for one shift and it is under his/her direct control, and
o the worker is going to place any leftover controlled product into a labeled container
                           before the shift is finished.

                    (2) labeling piping systems: Other means of identification could include the product name,
                    colour coding, numbering, lettering, etc.

Placarding: bulk materials (materials not in a container – e.g. pile of coal or sulfur) may have a
placard placed near it. The placard must contain the same information as a worksite label.

            Employer Responsibilities for Worksite Labels

Employers are responsible to ensure appropriate worksite labels (or their variations) are applied as
required, and that any clear means of identification used is understood by all workers.
