4. It can also be used to secure a load to a trailer or the bed
of your pickup truck.
Clove Hitch
A clove hitch is a simple, but handy knot that is often used to
attach a rope to an object in non-critical applications. This knot
relies on the friction of the wraps to hold it in place. Great
care and consideration was taken in regards to whether
this hitch should be included in this book. Ultimately, it was
included because, even with its limitations, it does have some
practical applications.
Pros: It is very quick and easy to tie and untie.
Cons: Due to its simplicity, this knot can often be prone
to slipping and/or capsizing. It has several useful purposes
but it shouldn’t be trusted as the single knot in critical applica-
tions. Additionally, if you tie a clove hitch on something and
tension isn’t maintained in the correct direction, the wraps
in this knot can capsize and the knot can become untied.
It’s important to understand that a clove hitch is a direction-
al knot. When tying it, you’ll be wrapping the rope around
an object in a particular direction. The friction that holds
the knot together will only be maintained if tension is pulled
in the correct direction. If you apply tension in the wrong
direction, the knot will capsize and become untied.
