3.  Pass the working end
              over the standing part
              and thread it under
              the “x” as illustrated
              in figure 32a.  The
              fact that the work-
              ing end passes over
              the standing part and
              then under the “x”
              is what makes this
              knot different than  Figure 32a.
              the clove hitch.  If you
              didn’t pass it over the
              standing part before
              threading it under the
              “x,” you would end
              up with a less secure
              clove hitch.

            4.  Dress the knot and
              pull the working end
              and standing part in
              the opposite direc-
              tions to complete the
              constrictor hitch.  The
              finished knot should
