UP AND AWARE - 8
In this activity, you will interview elders or people who have lived in your community for a
long time to learn what changes they have observed.
Here are some questions you can ask. Think of more to ask so that you understand the
changes better. Take notes in the interview.
You can ask the following questions:
1. How long have you been living in this area?
2. What was it like when you were a child or when you first came here?
3. How has the city/town/village/area changed since then?
4. Are there more or fewer animals and birds around than there were in the past?
5. What kinds of work and other activities did people do in the past? How have their
work and other activities affected the land and living beings in the area?
6. How have these changes made life better?
7. How have these changes caused harm to the environment?
8. Why should we care for the environment?
9. How should we care for the environment?
Think about:
Have you noticed changes in local ponds, rivers, or lakes? What has caused them?
Did local ecosystems change as much as you expected over the years? Explain.
What part of your research surprised you the most? Why?
Once you have gathered all the information, prepare a one-minute PowerPoint presentation
or make a poster and share your information with the class.
Compare your reports with those of other learners. Look for things that are both common
and different.
