Plants, insects, birds, animals and humans depend on each other for food, shelter
and survival. Together, all these living beings make up an ecosystem. They also interact
with things like water, soil, air, sunshine, etc. An ecosystem can be as small as a puddle or a
clump of moss under a pebble. Or, it can be as large as the Himalayas and the Pacific Ocean.
Imagine a deck of cards placed one on top of each other to
form a tower. The balance of the tower is very
delicate and can be easily toppled just
by whispering near one card.
The balance of an ecosystem
of living beings is just as
delicate. For example,
when rabbits were
introduced in Australia
in the 18 century, they
th
multiplied quickly and ate
up plants that were food for
animals which lived there
originally. As a result, the local
or native animals died and the
rabbits survived. This, in turn,
toppled the balance of many other
living beings.
