UP AND AWARE - 8

                        Exercise and Discuss:
Form groups of six to eight learners. Each group will research

to choose (remembering to follow the rules of collaboration) SUCCESS
one woman who has achieved success in any field from
any part of the world: films, literature, science, business,

innovation, sports, politics, governance and so on. Focus on the
challenges faced by this woman and her subsequent success.

                Using library/Internet sources, prepare a two-minute presentation
on her to share with the class. You can choose from the following: skit,

PowerPoint presentation, poster or any other manner that you like.

Here are some ideas on how to put together your presentation of your female icon:

                • Look for interesting information about your icon’s childhood and family life.
                • Find out about your icon’s school life.

                • Get to know how and when your icon dreamt of doing things differently.
                • Find out who supported, helped or inspired your icon.

                 Discuss:
                      1. What surprised you most during your research about this woman?

                      2. What did you learn from presentations of other groups?

                      3. Did they cover certain aspects that you overlooked?

                      4. Were there some common features in the stories of all the women?

Female foeticide is a shocking and horrifying practice in India. It involves killing the
female foetus before birth. Why? Because economically disadvantaged families expect
their children to earn an income from labour, and girls are considered to be physically

weaker than boys. In addition to that, the expenses of a girl’s wedding and dowry
have to be incurred by her parents and this is seen as a financial burden by many
families. These are not the reasons in well-to-do families and yet a girl child is often

                  considered unwanted.

It’s not only about financial hardship. It’s an attitude towards girls and women.
