CHAPTER Gender UP AND AWARE - 8
Equality
(Empathy)
Beginning:
Shakuntala Devi, popularly known as
the ‘Human Computer’, was a Maths
Wizard. She could solve complex
mathematical problems mentally, in
a matter of seconds. Because of her
extraordinary abilities, she made it to
The Guinness Book of World Records in
1982. She has written several books like
Fun with Numbers, Puzzles to Puzzle
You, Mathablit and Astrology
for You.
It is considered that women are not as good at Maths as men. Did Shakuntala Devi’s success
help in shattering that myth in any way?
Gender equality means that girls and boys, women and men have full and equal rights
at work, home and in society. It means that girls and boys, women and men, despite
having both similarities and differences, should be treated equally by people and society. It
also means that both girls and boys, women and men have equal value in all that they do.
For example, men and women getting equal pay for the same job; girls and boys having
access to education.
Gender stereotype is the mindset of the people in a society that girls and boys, women
and men must act, behave or dress according to their gender. For example, boys and men
do better at maths and science; girls and women are neat and tidy; men work and women
stay at home.
