UP AND AWARE - 8
Exercise and Discuss:
Form groups of six learners. Protagonist Ending Genre Character Humour
Call them A, B, C, D and so on.
This is a writing exercise. Story
Brainstorm the genre that
you would like to write (be
sure to practise the rules of Plot Suspense
collaboration).
You WILL NOT tell the other groups
the genre you have chosen.
Step 1: Brainstorm a story idea.
As a group, write the first paragraph (8-10 lines) of your story. This would be a sort
of introduction. You can have one or more characters with names. You can think of
a place where this story is set and write about it. The first paragraph MUST BE in
your chosen genre.
Step 2: After the time is up, pass your sheet to the next group (in alphabetical order)
and take one from another group. Write the next paragraph (after discussing with
your group) and develop the story in your own genre.
Step 3: Continue doing this with every sheet that comes to your group.
Step 4: When you finally get your own sheet, write the ending to the story in your
own genre.
Step 5: Make the stories as interesting as you can. They can be funny and thrilling
too. This is NOT a competition. It is an exercise in learning to work together and
with each other.
Share your stories with the class and guess each other’s genres.
Share how involved each of your team members was in the decisions that your group made.
1. Did your group come up with more ideas than you could handle or did your group have
a problem coming up with ideas?
2. How do you feel about how your story turned out? Did you like it? Was it interesting?
