UP AND AWARE - 8
Chinese parents try to find out a baby’s fortune on his/her first birthday by placing objects
like a coin, doll, book, etc., to see which object the baby picks up. In Japanese culture,
the 3 , 5 and 7 birthdays are celebrated during the Shichi-go-san Festival and children

th
are made to dress up in their finest clothes. In Norway, most birthday parties serve
chocolate cake with vanilla sauce. In Argentina, people pull the ear lobe of the birthday
child where each pull represents each year.
Paired Exercise:
Find out from your partner how he/she celebrates his/her birthday. Ask your partner what
his/her parents, grandparents and other family members do on his/her special day?
How do you say ‘happy birthday’ in your partner’s native language?
Do you celebrate your birthday differently?
Share with the class. People across the world, living in different lands, speaking different
languages and practising different religions share many of the same feelings of happiness as
you do.
‘When I see you through my eye, I think that we are different.
When I see you through my heart, I know we are the same.’
—Doe Zantamata
Exercise and Discuss:
Diversity means that there are different kinds of
things, for example, there are different colours
in a rainbow, different kinds of cuisines
and different models of a mobile phone.
Similarly, there is diversity among people.
In groups of four to six learners,
brainstorm how you think people
anywhere else in the world are different with
respect to the facial features and body types.
One has been done for you.
Hair colour and type: black, brown, blonde,
red, straight, curly, wavy
