A name is a label for a person, place or thing. For a person, it is the most important part
of his/her identity, one that connects the person to his/her place of birth, language, family,
tradition and culture.
A name helps us to distinguish one person
from another. Imagine how difficult
it would be if all the boys in the
world were called ‘B’ and all
the girls were called ‘G’. Or,
if we didn’t have names for
people and we referred to
them as ‘the boy/girl who
lives in house number 22’.
If there are two learners
in your class with the same
name, you must know how
that can be confusing for the
facilitators and other learners.
Different names are yet another
example of diversity.
