Form groups of four to six learners. Each group will choose a different country/community
to research on and look up a traditional name for a boy and a girl and the meanings of those
names. What do surnames mean? Find out how a child is named, for example, many Indian
babies have a namkaran or naming ceremony. Many Indonesians often use a single name
while people belonging to some communities in South India have long names.

Write a short story about your name: Who gave you your name? What does it mean in your
language? Do you have a ‘pet name’? What do you like to be called? Do you like to be called
by your ‘pet name’ only, at home or at school too? Would you like to change your name and
what would be the new name you would choose? Would you be a different person if you
had a different name?
Your story can be funny, creative, with or without a drawing/photo or even a poem.
Share your story with the class.
