‘From the Vedas we learn a practical art of surgery, medicine, music, house building
under which mechanised art is included. They are encyclopaedia of every aspect of
life, culture, religion, science, ethics, law, cosmology and meteorology.’

Exercise and Discuss:
Serving in the Indian armed forces is most certainly the most honourable way to serve the
country. But, not every person joins the armed forces. People serve our nation in different
ways and the Indian government recognises their service by giving awards in different fields.
The Bharat Ratna (‘Jewel of India’ or ‘Gem of India’) is the highest civilian award given to
those who contribute to public service in the fields of art, literature and science.
