More than a story…

On July 26, 2005, Mumbai experienced the highest recorded rainfall in its history. Many
parts of the city got submerged in water.

Hundreds of people drowned. Yet, there was no breakdown of civic order; nor did the

crime rate go up. The inhabitants of the city helped each other. Slum-dwellers approached
the roads and gave shelter to stranded motorists in their small homes. Volunteers walked
through waist-deep water to supply food to the 1,50,000 population stranded on railway
stations. Human chains were made to help people get out of the floods.

Discuss:

1. What would have happened if people had not helped each other
during the floods?
2. What would have happened if people had started fighting for the
limited supplies of food?

3. What would you have done if you were stranded in your car during
such a calamity?
