UP AND AWARE - 6 CHAPTER Respect for One's
                                       12

                                                              Nation

                                                        (Interpersonal Relationship)

                        Beginning:

India’s national flag is called the ‘tri-colour’ or ‘tiranga’. It was designed
                      by freedom fighter Pingali Venkayya.

Our National Anthem ‘Jana Gana Mana’, written by Rabindranath Tagore,
also honours our country and the millions of people living in India

who speak different languages and practise different religions. Do you
know which is the National Song of India and who wrote it? What is the
difference between a national song and a national anthem?

                        Think About and Discuss:

Flags mark the achievement of a country. For example, when the Americans Neil Armstrong

and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to land on the moon, they hoisted the American
flag, also called the ‘Stars and Stripes’, on the surface of the moon.

How do you think the Americans felt when they watched, on television, their fellow
                countrymen walk on the moon?

Think of other countries that have hoisted their flags proudly in places where no one has
                been before.
