   One-page instructional sheets written in short, simple words in active voice assist clients, even when more
detailed materials are also being given. These one-page sheets can be posted on the refrigerator or hung at the
office to remind clients of what to do and when to do it. Small give-away items such as pens, magnets,
puzzles, and games may also be useful to remind the person of your message.

Whiteboards and Flip Charts
Whiteboards and flip charts foster audience engagement when used in a participatory manner. Writing must
be legible and clear. Writing should also be large and bold to be seen—at least 1 to 2 in. high or more for
every 20 to 30 ft of audience space. Write key concepts before your audience arrives. This promotes face-to-
face talking by limiting your writing with your back to the audience.4

   Whiteboards, composed of erasable laminate surfaces, are mounted to walls or to moveable wheeled stands.
Use appropriate water-based markers that can be erased when your presentation is over, without leaving a
permanent image on the surface. Be prepared by bringing your own markers and eraser with you. You may
need to use a board-cleaning fluid to remove marker buildup so your message can be clearly read.
Whiteboards can also be planned to be used interactively by the audience. Learning teams can present
information by writing their findings. Audience members can rotate among information written on the
whiteboard and “vote” with supplied markers on concepts to determine opinions and consensus.
