SETTING UP FOR RECORDING
RADIO FORMAT OR CLASS Q&A?
Before you start, the class will need to decide on the
approach they are going to take when interviewing
SETTING
their visiting STEM expert.
The recommended choices are RADIO FORMAT or
CLASS Q&A.
UP FOR
RADIO FORMAT
If your class has decided to adopt a radio format to
RECORDING
interview their guest, they will need to consider the
following..
1. RECORDING SPACE
YOUR
Select a quiet room to record the podcast. The size
of the room will depend on whether the whole class
will be attending the recording or just the student
PODCAST
interviewers.
2. MAKE UP OF THE INTERVIEW PANEL
The class is to decide how many students will be part
of the interview panel.
3. FURNITURE
A round, square or rectangular table should be used
so that all panel members and the guest can face
each other while they are interacting.
4. MICROPHONE TECHNIQUE
If microphones on table stands are being used,
students need to be conscious of speaking directly
into them to ensure the best quality audio is captured.
Being even slightjy ‘off mic’ can adversely affect
recording levels.
For the best results students should practice using
their microphones prior to the podcast recording
session.
Using a phone or iPad to record the podcast as aprt of
a radio format set-up can be problematic.
If one phone is being used, the potential for dead air
i.e. long pauses of silence between questions and
answers, is great.
Whilst the long pauses can be deleted during the
editing process, it is still recommended that a student
be assigned to holding the phone and moving it as
quickly as possible between the interviewer asking the
question and the guest responding.
Again this should be practised prior to the recording.
