In 1847, shortly after his arrival from England, Joseph Gilbert built a fine homestead in Eden
Valley and planted the region’s first grapevines. These vines can be traced to some of the
original vine cuttings brought to Australia by James Busby. Like so many vineyards in the
1920s and 30s, Pewsey Vale fell into disuse but, thankfully, its potential was rediscovered. In
1961, pastoralist Geoffrey Angas Parsons became aware his property had once incorporated
the region’s earliest vineyard and shared his discovery with good friend, neighbour and
vigneron Wyndham Hill Smith. Initially, 56 hectares of Riesling was planted in contoured
rows. The several remaining hectares of these vines continue to provide fruit for Pewsey Vale
Vineyard The Contours Riesling. All plantings at Pewsey Vale Vineyard are propagated from
the original 1847 vines.
Australian Riesling
One of the ‘noble’ white varieties. Since 1990 plantings have
consolidated into the elevated & cooler climate regions that
have proven to produce outstanding Riesling.
The Eden Valley Riesling
• With an altitude undulating between 440 and 500 metres,
the amphitheatre shaped Pewsey Vale Vineyard sits 250
metres above the Barossa floor
• Each block of vines ripens slightly differently due to subtle
variations in soil and aspect, so each is picked and crafted
separately.
• Soils at Pewsey Vale are shallow rocky light sandy loams
over light to medium clay .
• Riesling grows well in these bony soils which are low in
fertility keeping vine vigour and yield low and the canopy
open.
Louisa Rose, Winemaker
• Pewsey Vale Vineyard is one of the world’s few and unique
single sites that, consistently vintage after vintage, grows
Riesling grapes that make complete and consistent wines.
