A Statement from the Research Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMI) Consortium

The RCMI Consortium congratulates Charles R. Drew University of Medicine (Los
Angeles, CA), Howard University College of Medicine (Washington, DC), Meharry Medical
College (Nashville, TN), and Morehouse School of Medicine (Atlanta, GA). Bloomberg
Philanthropies, the charitable organization founded by a business titan and former New
York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, is donating $100 million to a fund for students
attending the nation’s four Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) medical
schools. This gift will allow about 800 medical students in financial need to receive
scholarships of up to $100,000 over four years.
We write on behalf of the RCMI Consortium to sincerely thank Bloomberg Philanthropies for this
gift that will change the lives and careers of hundreds of medical students who are committed to
serving their communities. This is a significant step forward in the support of Black communities,
the education of Black medical professionals and the elimination of health disparities.

The RCMI Consortium applauds this affirmation from Bloomberg Philanthropies, as a critical
step toward endowing these Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) medical
schools. As members of the RCMI Consortium, which includes the four HBCU medical schools,
we recognize that much work remains to develop and sustain the healthcare workforce,
                        including physicians and biomedical scientists.

Our path forward to building a diverse biomedical research workforce is much stronger today,

thanks to Bloomberg Philanthropies. The ripple effect of this gift will be significant and will
                        transcend generations.
