Dear Mr. Bloomberg:
My name is Nicholas Martin. I am a first-year (Class of 2024) MD candidate at Morehouse School of
Medicine. I am writing this letter to you and Bloomberg Philanthropies to express my deepest
gratitude for the life-changing investment you have made in my future.
When I first heard that Bloomberg Philanthropies would be giving each MD candidate a scholarship
to alleviate the burden of student debt, I was overwhelmed with emotion, joy, and thankfulness.
Nothing in my life has been given – I have earned it through practice, failure, and sacrifice.
Nevertheless, I have never given up. I once heard from a man that “nobody will invest in yourself
more than you invest in yourself,” and I took that to heart.
To be blessed by Bloomberg Philanthropies with an investment in my potential and path to help
other minorities is a genuine and heart-warming opportunity that I will not take for granted.
With your help, I will be significantly less stressed about the finances of medical school and focused
on becoming the best surgeon that I can be. After graduating and completing my residency, I plan
on pursuing a career in pediatric or orthopedic surgery for about 15 years in a hospital. My long-
term goal is to create a collaborative practice of surgeons with an emphasis on community outreach,
preventive education, and widespread medical-resource distribution in underserved urban
communities.
Truthfully, I will never have the words to express the depth of my gratitude. By paying it forward to
a generation of future physicians and other healthcare professionals, you are not only showing us the
selflessness of humanity, but you are also inspiring us to be the best people we can be. For that, I am
forever humbled and grateful.
Sincerely,
Nicholas M. Martin
