The History of New Bern Alumnae Chapter
2003: On January 17, 2003, the chapter hosted a Golden Anniversary
Reception at the Sheraton Grand Hotel and Marina in New Bern. The
reception was attended by friends, family, community leaders, and Delta
notables including 22nd National President Gwendolyn E. Boyd, 16th
National President Dr. Thelma T. Daley, and 13th South Atlantic
Regional Director Mary Bennett Sutton. The next day, the chapter
hosted the 36th Area Founders Day at the New Bern Riverfront
Convention Center. On February 28, 2003, the chapter hosted a
luncheon at the Chelsea Restaurant in New Bern. The luncheon focused
on the achievements over the past 50 years. Soror Franks and Soror
Richards gave historical perspectives about the events leading to the February 28, 2003
chapter=s chartering. They were presented with gifts from the chapter, Ida S. Franks
representative of their contributions, with special recognition of Soror Frank=s continuous
membership. Concluding the year-long events was a 50th Anniversary Dance held on April 26,
2003, at the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center. Entertainment was provided by the Dick
Knight Express Band of Kinston and the event was catered by The Food Palace of New Bern.
Present were approximately 300 persons from the tri-county community who supported the
chapter=s initiatives throughout the years.
Community Service Firsts and Other Events
Careerama for ninth grade students at Fort Barnwell.
Financial aid workshops, partially funded by a grant from Grand Chapter.
Annual senior citizens/foster parents recognition dinners.
Donated drapes, television, books, toys, etc. to the pediatric ward of Good Shepherd Hospital.
Health Fair at the Ramada Inn, chaired by Soror Mary C. Dove, with emphasis on Sickle Cell
Anemia and hypertension.
Cancer screening clinic at Dr. Littman=s office, with Mrs. Helen Evans, RN, and several corpsmen
from Cherry Point Naval Hospital.
Annual Student Achievement Day.
Refurbished the meeting room at the Omega Center.
Furnished the conference room at the United Senior Services Center in New Bern.
1970: Hosted the 3rd Area Founders Day attended by more than 200 sorors with the keynote
address provided by 16th National President Thelma T. Daley.
1980: Hosted the 13th Area Founders Day attended by more than 400 sorors. Greetings were
brought by New Bern=s first African-American mayor, Leander R. Morgan, husband of chapter
member Soror Barbara R. Morgan. The keynote address was provided by South Atlantic
Regional Director Norma Sermon.
1980: Refurbished the community room of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Center.
1987: Established the Delta Memorial Scholarship, dedicated to graduating seniors who are
residents of the New Bern Housing Authority.
1988: Furnished the conference room at the George Street Center, United Senior Services, Inc.
