The History of New Bern Alumnae Chapter
1989: Fourteen chapter members, residents of Jacksonville, chartered the Jacksonville Alumnae
Chapter.
2003: Hosted the 36th Area Founders Day at the New Bern Riverfront
Convention Center. The event was chaired by Soror Esther B. Hardin
and was attended by approximately 800 sorors representing 34
chapters in Eastern North Carolina. The keynote address was provided
by 22nd National President Gwendolyn E. Boyd. Also present to
provide remarks were 16th National President Dr. Thelma T. Daley,
Lieutenant Governor Beverly E. Perdue, City of New Bern Mayor
Tom A. Bayliss, III, Margaret Noble of the Jones County Board of January 17, 2003 (l-r) Norma
Education, and the presidents of other area Greek-letter organizations. Sermon-Boyd, Gwendolyn E.
Entertainment was provided by Soror Marva M. Robinson of the Boyd, Ida S. Franks.
Wilmington Alumnae Chapter. The event was catered by The Flame Restaurant of New Bern.

President). Coast Civic Center in Morehead City. Assistance with
hosting duties was provided by Kappa Sigma Chapter, East Carolina University. The event was co-
chaired by Soror Demetrics Davis and Soror Esther Hardin. More than 600 sorors attended the
meeting which was presided over by 15th South Atlantic Regional Director Linda Richardson Wilson
and 20th South Atlantic Regional Representative Amanda Wise. Remarks on behalf of New Bern
Alumnae were provided by Chapter President Ann Herndon. Providing greetings were North
Carolina Senator Jean Preston; Representative William L. Wainwright, Speaker Pro Tempore of the
NC House of Representatives; the Honorable Cheryl L. Spencer, District Court Judge, Judicial
District 3-B, and a member of New Bern Alumnae; and representatives from Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority, Inc. and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. The event was catered by The Flame Restaurant of
New Bern. As the community service initiative for the event, donations of clothing, bibles, and
monetary gifts were made to STAFF House Maternity Home of New Bern.
