A Friend
It is inborn, this our need, full of wanting;
In even a child with an outlook dim, it is known.
For it comes of our nature, full of craving,
This great need of a friend is in us sown.
It’s a close friend, this we need, full of sharing
Those troubles and joys which we need must share, with a friend.
’Tis human nature still, when kin can’t understand,
To doff the burdens of the heart, our sorrows unbend,
Speak to one that will listen, understand and quiet
Our hearts in the knowledge that all will be well.
The hermit in the hillside bare feels this great need,
Of this same feeling he too will often tell.
But earthly friends will fail us when we need them most,
No human love, no canine friend, gives rest in urgent times
But some know One who never fails, a Friend in need,
He’ll hold us fast where’er we are, in all this earth’s wild climes.
