as it is his last year among Cadets. How pleased we all are that Mr.
and Mrs. Wilson were able to see their son again fill his part so well
as under officer and commentator of the exercise. It was with deepest
regret that we heard next day of Mr. Wilson’s passing away during
the night. The Company extends sincere sympathy to Mrs Wilson and
Mal.
At the completion of the parade, commanded by U.O. Kydd, we
prepared for our manoeuvre. The Northlanders attacking platoon,
commanded again by U.O. Kydd made a vicious assault on the strongly
held enemy position commanded by U.O. Barnett. By weight of numbers
the enemy was defeated, although they did have a machine-gun fixing
for the duration of the exercise. Cdt. Farrelly made an excellent crew
member for the machine-gun crew. Our smoke screen expert was very
nearly successful in exterminating the enemy by engulfing the complete
defence area with “poisonous gas". We were pleased to see among the
attacking party several third formers, a few of whom I shall take the
space to mention. There were L./Cpl’s. Martin, Travers, and McDonald,
and Cdts. Lindley, Forward and several others. Despite all this, there
were no hard feelings at the sumptuous afternoon tea which followed.
Our traditional Passing-out Parade cake was cut following a short
vote of thanks from Sgt. Vela. We would like to thank Miss Nixon and
those High School girls who helped in the preparation and also the
Domestic Science teachers who made the cake.
As the year draws to a close, we all look back with a certain feeling
of accomplishment—the Unit has passed its infancy and is now ready
for bigger and more important tasks.
