Cardwell. The months of training by Miss Nixon and Miss Valtilla
were very much in evidence in the ball games and the precision and
timing of most of our girls was a delight, with the result that at no
time was the fate of the cup ever in doubt.
The boys can feel proud of themselves for their part in the
campaign. Selwyn Loynes showed that he is one of the best athletes
this school has ever produced, and it is a great pity that the state of
our oval has robbed him of the school records in both the 100 and
220. He ran a close second to Bruce Robertson in the 220 at the
Q.S.S.S.S.A. Carnival and was beaten in a photo finish in the 100 in
the fast time of 10.3. Gary Cummings is also an unlucky competitor
(he was nearly robbed of third place in the open high jump), having
cleared 5ft. 6ins., which exceeds the school record by 2.5 inches. Bill
Davies fought on and gave it all he had and then some more in the
open mile to finish fifth. Good performances were also turned in by
the open relay (Mal Wilson gave everybody heart attacks in continuing
in his lane), the two hurdlers, Mal and Geoff Horsburgh, and the “babies”
of the team, Graham Pearson and Dennis Davis. If we can convert
some of the side thrust in Dennis’ action into a forward action we have
a star in him. Graham has already changed his style to the straddle in
the high jump and will be a force next year.
All things considered, our school can feel justly proud of our
athletes, both girls and boys, as they certainly set an example for others
to follow.
