BASKETBALL
In the heat of summer, enthusiastic girls commenced practice for
the coming basketball season. By May 14 our teams were fighting fit
and ready for the battle. However, vanquished girls arrived home from
Cavendish Road with their spirits dashed. After a stimulating talk
from Miss Nixon and more practice we looked forward to our match
against Salisbury. The scores were indeed close but still we were
defeated.
The following week our B team journeyed to Balmoral and were
victorious. To conclude our first round we had two wet matches against
Commercial and Camp Hill. On the return round we repeated our
earlier performances by defeating Camp Hill after a hard struggle and
being ourselves defeated by Commercial.
This year it was our turn to entertain Moreton Bay and St. Aidan’s
in the G.P.S. fixtures, while we travelled to St. Peter’s and Clayfield.
Morning tea was served on each of these occasions by the home team.
We won our match against Moreton Bay, and, although beaten by small
margins in the others, we enjoyed ourselves immensely.
The following representatives from our school were chosen to play
in the Q.S.S.S.S.A. teams against the Queensland Women’s Basketball
teams : B. Arnold, P. Burnett, L. Allan, B. Brown and L. Hillier. L.
Edwards played as an emergency.
The school teams are as follows : A team—B. Arnold, L. Allan, G.
Sims, N. Bielenberg, P. Baker, B. Brown. L. Hillier. L. Gibbs.
B team—R. Miller, P. Jeffcoat, L. Edwards, J. Hore, D. Leeder, G.
Paterson, P. Burnett.
INTERMEDIATE BASKETBALL.
After some years of no regular inter-school matches the school is
once again participating in the Primary Schools’ District competition.
Two teams played each Friday and were very successful, the A team
defeating all the other schools in the A group and then defeating
Gumdale, the leaders of the B group. The members of the winning team
were C. Easten, G. Love, D. Cloherty, S. Batchelor, J. Cocho, Y.
Gartside and Y. Chantler and R. Symons of the B team played in the
final match.
A competition at school among seven other teams was organised
but had to be abandoned because the oval wasn’t available for play.
SOFTBALL
For the first time Wynnum Intermediate was represented in the
Wynnum District Softball competition. Two teams took part and
although neither team was successful the girls gained some valuable
experience and hope to have more success in the coming season.
Margaret Brown, Kay Pearson, Jan Devey, Dawn Cloherty and Lorraine
Ayton were chosen to represent Wynnum district in a carnival held in
Brisbane.
