The standard of swimming in the Q.S.S.S.S.A. carnivals is very
high and is still rising and for Wynnum once again to do well in this
competition her swimmers must realise the value and necessity of
consistent and systematic training and, if possible, regular competition.
We would like to extend our thanks to Miss Cribb, Mr. Christensen
and Mr. Doube for their assistance and encouragement in our training
and in the preparation for the Inter-House and inter-school carnivals.
INTERMEDIATE SWIMMING CARNIVAL.
This carnival was most successful and the introduction of races of
33 yards, in addition to the championships of 66 yards, increased the
interest in the points competition which resulted in a very close finish.
Wentworth 152; Griffith 143; Lilley 101.
The individual champions were :
Girls : D. Hinckley (10 points), 1; W. Eames (5), 2; D. Woods, L.
McQuillan (3), 3.
Boys : P. Jaillet (13 points), 1; R Ricketts (8), 2; G. Keenan
(3), 3.
The winners with the exception of L. McQuillan represented the
district in the Queensland Primary Schools’ championships, but only
W. Eames was successful in gaining a place.
INTER-SCHOOL SWIMMING CARNIVALS.
The girls were not very successful in the inter-school carnivals last
season. The most successful at the Girls’ Secondary were P. Clarke
5th in 15 years breaststroke, W. Eames 4th in 14 years breaststroke
and D. Hinckley 5th in 8th grade championship. In the State Secondary
P. Clarke gained a 5th place in the under 16 freestyle and the under
15 relay swam into 5th place. W. Eames gained a third place in the
Queensland Primary Schools senior breaststroke.
We look forward to more success next season.
LIFE-SAVING
Last season’s work was very good indeed and the number of awards
gained was a record. In a competition involving 46 schools, clubs and
organisations in Queensland the school gained 9th place and this is all
the more meritorious because we have no pool at our own school. We
are very proud of the achievement of P. Railings who gained the
“Distinction Award” as there were only six gained in the State during
the season. Pam Clarke received the next highest award with her
"Award of Merit,” and in addition seven Bronze Stars, one Bronze
Medallion. 12 Intermediate Stars, 16 Proficiency, 27 Elementary and 24
Resuscitation Certificates were presented to our pupils.
At the R.L.S. championships the school achieved some success with
P. Martin and S. Macdonald 3rd in the pairs championship; P. Jaillet,
G. Keenan, B. Railings, P. Martin, S. Macdonald. P. Jaillet 2nd in
secondary relay, while the girls, D. Hinckley, M. Houghton, R. McNeil,
D. Carmichael were 2nd in primary relay and P. Clarke, F. Ede, D.
Hinckley, M. Houghton and two past students, G. Martin and R. Rogers,
won the Heilig Cup relay.
Mention must be made of Veronica O’Neil, whose knowledge of life
saving was instrumental in saving a child’s life, and her example has
increased the interest in this valuable work.
