such occasions and trust that we will see him on many more such
occasions. A special word of thanks must go to all the officials who
pulled their weight so magnificently, thus enabling the carnival to finish
on time in spite of a delay of 1.5 hours in the morning, and also to the
competitors, whether they won or lost, “this is their finest hour.”
Congratulations to Griffith House, ably led by Frances 'Ede and
Selwyn Loynes, for their fine win.
Final points : Griffith 478.5, Wentworth 336, Lilley 305.5.
GIRLS' ATHLETICS
G.P.S. Saturday, August 2, was the date of the G.P.S. Sports held
at the Brisbane Cricket Ground. Wynnum High School girls put up
a creditable performance to come eighth against much larger schools.
As usual, Laraine Hillier ran well, while other individual runners
who performed creditably were Judy Turnbull and Sharon Cordwell. Our
ball games teams were successful in as much as they gained second
place in file-gap pass and third in the leader ball. The Under 15 teams,
which did well in the flat racing, failed to gain a place in the ball
games. Q.S.S.S.S.A.
This year the school was blessed with an unusual quota of good
runners, especially among the younger age groups. This running team
helped to win the President’s Cup for second grade schools and to come
second out of thirty-four competing schools.
Laraine Hillier took the 75 yards under 16 championship and she
caused an upset by convincingly winning the 100 yards open champion
ship in 11.2 seconds to equal the existing record. Another individual
performer, Judy Turnbull, ran splendidly to gain second placing in
the 100 yards under 15 and third in the 75 yards.
The under 15 relay team consisting of Leah Gibbs, Elaine Phillips,
Deirdrie Brown and Judy Turnbull, won its heat and came second in
the final. The other two relays entered the finals but were unplaced.
The under 15 ball games teams were placed in all their heats and
the over 15 in all but one. The finals of the latter were disappointing:
Under 15 were more successful, coming first in the leader ball, third in
zig-zag and file-gap pass, and fifth in captain ball.
On both occasions a large number of spectators cheered lustily for
our competitors who were very grateful for this support. Finally, all
competitors would like to thank Miss Nixon and Miss Valtilla who
spent many hours—“morning, noon and night”—in training us for
these sports meeting.
Q.S.S.S.S.A. ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
The year 1958 will go down as one of our most successful years in
the athletics world, for we came within one point of scoring a double
victory, in both girls’ and boys’ competitions. The girls, as we all
expected, turned in a sterling performance to win the President’s Cup,
and the boys were breathing hard on the necks of Ipswich boys to be
defeated by the narrow margin of one point.
In the girls’ events Laraine Hillier showed excellent pace to win
the Under 16 75 yards and the Open 100 yards, the latter time equalling
the record. In the Open 100 she scored a narrow margin over Lillian
Davies, the State High girl who was tipped to win it. Judith Turnbull
performed very well for the school and was ably assisted by Sharon
