                                   SWIMMING
This year an important step was taken in dividing the Inter-House
Swimming Carnival. This enabled the whole school to be there, either
as competitors or as spectators. There were some very good individual
performances, the following gaining championships :
                Intermediate : Girls : Minor, W. Eames; junior, J. Coulter. Boys :
Minor, R. Ricketts; junior, K. Paxman.
                High School : Girls : 15 years, P. Clark; 15 and under 16, B.
            Arnold; 16 and over, G. Martin. Boys : Under 15, E. Taylor; under 16,
            P. Railings; open, R. Wren.
District representatives at the Primary School’s Carnival were :
            Girls : K. Pearson, E. O’Shea, L. Lind, W. Eames, J. Coulter. Boys :
            R. Ricketts, N. Robson, D. Farley, G. Lind, P. Martin, M. McDonald, L.
            Ackworth, R. McNeilly.
However, the competition was too good and no places were gained.
The representatives from the school in the State Secondary and
G.P.S. Carnival were unable to gain many places.
This year the school was fairly successful in life-saving competitions.
The McWhirter Cup team, G. Martin, M. Kerr, F. Ede, J. Cafferky gained
fourth place in the competition, but were only five points behind the
            winners.
The boys, P. Railings and D. Jaffrey, were narrowly beaten in the
pairs’ championship at the Royal Life-saving Carnival.
A record number of awards were gained from the school this year.
Congratulations are extended to Glenice Martin for being the first
student at this school to gain the Award of Merit and the first life-saving
pocket. Congratulations also to Phillip Railings for gaining a half
            pocket for life-saving.
Glenice Martin, Frances Ede, and Margaret Kerr gained their
            instructor’s badge.
Others worthy of mention are P. Jeffcoat, J. McQuillan, R. Tendys,
            R. Nichols, P. Railings, S. Robinson and D. Rogers, who gained the
            Bronze Cross.
In addition to this, thirteen gained Bronze Medallions, twenty-three
Intermediate Stars and sixteen lower awards.
We would like to thank Miss Cribb, Mr. Doube, and Mr. Christensen
for their invaluable support and help in preparing for all inter-school
            swimming carnivals.
We would also like to thank Miss Cribb for her help in life-saving
competitions and in teaching us in preparation for awards.
