BASKETBALL
HIGH SCHOOL.
This year, as other years, our school partook in both State Secondary
and G.P.S. basketball fixtures. We began practising earlier this year
but the first match against Cavendish Road seemed to dim our hopes.
Their team was much stronger this year, but with the return match,
which was played on our own court, the results were very close. We
shared the honours with Salisbury, each being successful on his own
court. Cleveland and Camp Hill could supply only an A and B team,
but the standard of our teams was much higher. As has happened in
the past years, Commercial defeated us easily and we congratulate them
on their performances, which resulted in their winning the South Zone
pennant.
The G.P.S. fixtures proved to be very enjoyable. We played and
entertained to morning tea afterwards St. Peter’s and Clayfield College.
Both were hard games, the visiting schools defeating us by a small
margin. It was our turn to visit Moreton Bay this year and after a hard
struggle we came out the winners.
For most schools we supplied two teams, but to give all the girls
a game Cavendish Road was agreeable to bring five teams and Salisbury
three.
Our A team consisted of Shirley Marshall, Noela Butler, Doreen
Curtis, Annette Curtis, Barbara Arnold, Marjorie Lee, Jill Paterson
(captain).
While our B team—Ruth Clarke (captain), Lenore Ashcroft. Pam
Burnett, Glenise Sims, Delma Leeder, Marion Worthington, Marga
Mezmalis with Merle Cook and Penny Baker as reserves.
Our sincere thanks go to Miss Nixon for her unfailing assistance
in our training.
INTERMEDIATE.
Throughout the season keen interest has been shown from both
First and Second Forms.
Inter-Form competitions were conducted with Form 2G emerging as
the Second Form champions and Form 1H proving themselves to be the <
best in the First Form.
A, B and C teams were chosen to represent the school against
Cleveland. We first met Cleveland on our home ground when all three
teams proved to be superior to the visitors. A return match at Cleveland
was arranged, and our teams were again successful. The standard of
1
play in these matches was high throughout, but some players deserve
a special mention :—
A team: Beverley Brown (captain), Narella McLellan.
B team : Nona Davis (captain), Lyn Edwards.
C team: Gaye Love (captain), Yvonne Chantler.
