The passage you have just read follows the structure of a factual description. The first
paragraph is the introduction. It tells you what you are going to read in the passage (the
Aoshima Island). The second, third, and fourth paragraphs describes different features of
the place. The second paragraph tells about cats as the main attraction of the island. The
third paragraph tells about the attitude of the cats towards visitors. The fourth paragraph
tells about feeding the cats. The fifth paragraph provides the conclusion—that visitors

should be respectful towards the residents of the island, especially the cats.
C. Grammar
Now, look at the grammatical features. The first feature is the use of the present tense. Is
the present tense used in the first paragraph?
Aoshima is a sleepy island in Ehime Prefecture just one mile long and is better
known by its nickname, “Cat Island.” With feline residents outnumbering the
human population by about eight to one, it’s a must-visit for all cat lovers!
The answer is “Yes”. The parts highlighted in blue show you where they are found in the first
paragraph. Identify the present tense in the other paragraphs and write them in the spaces
provided.

The second language feature is the use of adjectives. Is there any adjective in the first
