• The α-hydroxy aldehyde function is a center of instability such that
streptomycin cannot be sterilized by autoclaving, but instead sterilized by
ultrafiltration.
b) 2-deoxystreptamine aminoglycosides
1. Kanamycin
Kanamycins A, B, C: Antibiotic complex from Streptomyces kanamyceticus.
Kanamycin is stable when heated with acid or alkaline solutions and even
withstand autoclaving.
• It is used parentrally against gram-negative bacteria but Pseudomonas
aeruginosa and anaerobes are usually resistant.
• Its injections are painful and sometimes require a local anesthetic.
• Available in oral, intravenous, and intramuscular forms.
