School Health Nursing
Definition of school nursing:
Is the specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the
wellbeing, academic success and lifelong achievement of students. To
that end, school nurse facilitate positive student responses to normal
development, promote health and safety, intervene with actual and
potential health problems, provide case management services and
actively collaborate with others.
School of all levels make up a major group of settings for
community health nursing practice. Nurses from community health
nursing agencies frequently serve schools at elementary and
intermediate levels. The community health nurse may work with groups
of students in preschool settings, as well as vocational or technical
schools, junior colleges, and college and university settings. Specialized
schools, such as those for the developmentally disabled, are another
setting for community health nursing practice.
Role of the nurse in the school health program:
School nurse as a manager :
Assist in planning, implementing and evaluating a school health
program.
The school nurse develops and implements policies and
procedures concerned with client health.
For students with special needs, the school nurse is
knowledgeable and conversant about the federal laws that afford
these students a free and appropriate education in the least
restrictive environment.
School nurse as a consultant:
Consultant to classroom teachers in the area of health
promotion.
