SCHOOL HEALTH
School nurse participate in assessment, implementation, and
evaluation of the health education curriculum.
School nurse as researcher:
School nurse should initiate research studies and test new
approaches and concepts in school nursing.
School nurse as health screener:
Purpose of screening:
To identify a symptomatic people who may un knowingly have a
problem.
Importance of screening in schools:
Number of problems diagnosed by physical examination has been
shown to predict a child's absenteeism from school.
Screening can be done as the following:
o History taken: past and present health problem.
o Observation: signs of sickness or deviation from normal.
o Screening tests: vision, hearing, speech, weight and height.
o Laboratory investigation: urine, stool, blood, and chest x-
ray.
o Periodic medical examination: done at the start of each
new grade, by physicians, dentists and nurse.
o Special surveys: to detect any health problem e.g.
D.M…………….etc.
School nurse as provider of emergency care:
School nurse must be knowledgeable about first aid,
management of emergencies, community resources and referral
and follow-up procedures.
