2. Infant mortality rate
Infant mortality rate: is the number of infants' deaths under one
year of age per 1000 live birth in a given population and year. Infant
mortality = Neonatal mortality and post neonatal mortality.
No of infant deaths (under 1 year) in a given area &
IMR = year
No of live births in same area and year × 1000
Infant mortality rate in Egypt= 18.1/1000 live birth (UN estimates 2019)
Causes of infant mortality:
1. Respiratory tract infection.(ARI)
2. Gastro enteritis.
3. Prematurity.
Measures to reduce infant mortality:
1. Raising the standard of community (better housing, education,
better advanced medical care, good nutrition and income).
2. Environmental sanitation.
3. Educate girls the art of mother craft and infant care.
4. Good coverage during the antenatal, natal and postnatal period.
5. Improvement of MCH services especially the educational activities.
6. Immunization.
7. Special care to premature infants.
8. Prevention of Gastro enteritis and prompt treatment of acute
respiratory infections.
9. Family planning.
10. Encourage breast feeding and proper weaning.
