I dropped the feathe r bac k onto the pillow an d brought my han d to my side .

“What ’s stopping you? Your uncle is of fering you a plac e to stay. That ’s good,
                right ?”
He tight ened hi s lips togethe r an d nodde d. The n he picked up the feat he r I’d
been play ing with an d he star ted twisting it between hi s fingers. He lai d it bac k
do wn on the pillow an d the n he di d somethi ng I was n’t expecting. He moved
hi s fingers to my lips an d he touche d the m.

God, Ellen. I tho ught I was gonna di e right the n an d the re. It was the most
I’d ever felt inside my body at one time. He kept hi s fingers the re for a few
seconds , an d he sai d, “Than k you, Li ly. For ever ythi ng.” He moved hi s fingers
up an d through my hai r, an d the n he lean ed for ward an d plan ted a kiss on my
forehe ad. I was breat hi ng so har d, I had to open my mouth to cat ch more ai r. I
could see hi s che st moving just as har d as mine was . He looked do wn at me
an d I wat che d as hi s eyes went right to my mouth. “Hav e you ever been kissed,

                Li ly?”
I sho ok my he ad no an d tilted my fac e up to hi s becau se I neede d hi m to
chan ge that right the n an d the re or I was n’t gonna be ab le to breat he .
The n—al most as if I were made of eggshe lls—he lowered hi s mouth to mine
an d just rested it the re. I di dn ’t know what to do next, but I di dn ’t care. I
di dn ’t care if we just stay ed like that al l night an d never even moved our

mouths , it was ever ythi ng.
His lips closed over mine an d I could kind of feel hi s han d shak ing. I di d
what he was do ing an d star ted to move my lips like he was . I felt the tip of hi s
tongue brush ac ross my lips once an d I tho ught my eyes were ab out to roll bac k
in my he ad. He di d it ag ai n, an d the n a thi rd time, so I final ly di d it, too.
Whe n our tongues touche d for the first time, I kind of smiled a little, becau se
I’d tho ught ab out my first kiss a lot. Whe re it would be, who it would be with.

Ne ver in a million year s di d I imag ine it would feel like thi s.
He pushe d me on my bac k an d pressed hi s han d ag ai nst my che ek an d kept
kissing me. It just got better an d better as I grew more comfor tab le. My fav orite
moment was whe n he pulled bac k for a second an d looked do wn at me, the n
cam e bac k even har de r.
I do n’t know ho w long we kissed. A long time. So long, my mouth star ted to

hu r t an d my eyes couldn ’t stay open. Whe n we fell as leep, I’m pretty sure hi s
mouth was still touchi ng mine.
We di dn ’t tal k ab out Bo ston ag ai n.
I still do n’t know if he ’s leav ing.
