The Phantom of the Opera is a musical with music by Andrew Lloyd
Webber, lyrics by Charles Hart, additional lyrics by Richard Stilgoe and a
libretto by Lloyd Webber and Stilgoe. Based on Gaston Leroux's 1910 novel
of the same name, it tells the story of a disfigured composer who haunts
the Paris Opera House. The musical premiered in London on 9 October
1986 at Her Majesty's Theatre, and opened on Broadway on 26 January
1988 at the Majestic Theatre, where it ran for 13,981 performances, closing
on 16 April 2023. It is the longest-running Broadway show in history.
The Phantom of the Opera has been translated into 25 languages and
has been performed in over 100 cities worldwide. It has won numerous
awards, including seven Tony Awards, three Olivier Awards, and a
Grammy Award.
