Survey And Loss Assessment IC-S01
The principal objective of a survey, in a nutshell, is to establish the cause of loss or
damage and to assess fairly and accurately the extent of loss in monetary terms in
conformity with the specific policy conditions
The procedure followed in surveying / assessing the loss, is by and large the same,
subtle changes and variations are inevitable, depending on the nature and size of loss
type and nature of affected property, nature of liabilities, specific policy conditions /
warranties. etc.
A simple procedural sequential approach, generally followed by surveyors, in
dealing with normal or average type of losses is furnished below
i) Getting the copy of the current insurance policy with all the endorsements
relevant to the claim from the Insurer, preferably prior to reaching the scene of
occurrence
ii) Visiting the site of the reported occurrence and making on-the-spot inspection
iii) Examining the claim related contents of the policy
iv) Conferring with the insured or his authorised representative and getting all
the facts and details of the loss / damage in general and the sequence of events
leading to the loss / damage in particular.
