care they needed and the father enjoyed it. Having satisfied these basic needs, he
must have tried to become a good hunter, become a leading hunter and earn the
esteem from his fellow man. Having received the esteem, he would go on to realize
his potentiality in other areas of his choice like art or music etc.
These basic needs of men are perennial and have continued from the time of the
cave age to the present day. May be methods of satisfying these needs have
changed, but they do exist today as they existed in the pre-historic period.
Abraham H. Maslow of the famed book, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, have
identified these five basic needs and he puts them in the order in which these needs
arise. In the ascending order they are :
1. Physiological need.
2. Security.
3. Affiliation.
4. Esteem.
5. Self actualization.
Maslow made certain assumptions in this context:
1.Satisfying ones need is not the end of the matter. Satisfaction of one leads to
another need which needs to be satisfied.
2.No need is simple. It is always a complex need and how one satisfies it depends
upon his attitude and personality.
