Messina Cathedral
The cathedral of Messina was built around 1097 in the Norman
period but was remodeled several times in 1919 and after 1943.
The facade retains the ancient lower part with stripes of
polychrome marble and reliefs and the three Gothic portals of
which the central is of the beginning of the fifteenth century.
The bell tower in which the largest mechanical clock in the world is
incorporated was built by the architect Valenti next to the
cathedral. At the stroke of noon all the figures connected to the
clock move in turn: the lion roars, the rooster sings, the angel flies,
the Madonna blesses, Jesus appears, the dove flies, a church
appears, death appears. with the scythe, the days pass and the
moon turns.
