Ursino Castle – Catania
Ursino Castle was built by the architect Riccardo da Lentini in 1239
by order of Frederick II of Sweden. It is a grandiose square mass
with cylindrical angular towers and surrounded by a moat, it
served for a long time to defend the city on the seashore.
From the end of the thirteenth century. it hosted the Aragonese
court, then Alfonso il Magnanimo and was later inhabited by the
viceroys of Acuna, Gonzaga, Pignatelli and Vega. In 1669 it was
partly destroyed by the lava, today completely rebuilt
